Foot Diagnosis

I was finally able to get in for an MRI on my foot Monday. I ran for a few minutes the day before but otherwise hadn’t run since the Musselman Triathlon. It felt like it was getting gradually better, but I was hoping the MRI would uncover the problem and help with the treatment plan since it has been going on for the past 7 weeks or so. Fortunately or unfortunately, the MRI came back negative, so I made another appointment to see the doctor on Friday. He took another look at the MRI and still didn’t see anything, but I could hop up and down a few times on the foot and still replicate the pain. He thinks that I may have mildly sprained the top of my foot and that the metatarsal is now somewhat subluxated (dislocated) when I run. Since there definitely isn’t anything wrong with the actual bone, it seems like that diagnosis makes sense given how it started hurting, when it currently hurts, and what makes it feel a little better. He went ahead and gave me an injection in the third metatarsal joint to reduce the inflammation. I haven’t tried running on it yet, but while walking around it definitely feels a lot better. The doctor said it would be fine to go ahead and run on it, and if it is still hurting in a week or two that a chiropractor may be able to help it out more.

Running on the Alter-G seemed to be fine on it the last time around, so I’m going to try that again. After a few runs on that at a lower percentage of my body weight, I’ll go ahead and try running on a normal treadmill. I just won’t be quite as aggressive in upping the volume as I was when trying to feel reasonably in shape for the Musselman Triathlon.

Otherwise, swimming, biking, and strength training have all been coming along pretty steadily. I did a speed swim and bike workout later in the week and will do a race pace swim and bike workout in the next couple of days. I feel like my short speed is getting better in both disciplines and hopefully that will translate into faster racing soon.
