Recent Training

I raced at the Wildflower Half Ironman back on May 3 and had a pretty good result.  I went faster in the swim, bike, and run compared to 2 years ago, so it was a good sign of progress, especially since my bike training volume had been a bit lacking the previous months.  I then took a week easy to help make sure I was recovered before starting some faster, race-specific training for some ITU Olympic distance races later this summer.  I ended up taking one more week of aerobic training because I was still feeling a little fatigued.  It was a good decision, as I felt great when I started faster training.  I ended two ~2 week cycles on Sunday with nice improvements in every sport.

A week and a half ago I raced at the San Jose International Triathlon and place 3rd among the elites racing.  I went two minutes faster than I had last year and had the fastest run split of the day.  This was all good considering it was the first race I’ve actually “trained through” in a long time.  I was feeling a little fatigued going into it and was really happy with the result considering.

Last Thursday I did a tempo bike/run consisting of 3x(20:00 on the Computrainer at ~23.5mph, ~30s transition, 10:00 @ ~5:13 mile pace, 3:00 rest).  I had done a similar workout a couple weeks ago, and this time it felt easier, so that was good.

67.5 mile Coastal Bike LoopOn Saturday I did a long bike ride with a fair amount of climbing out to the coast and back - up Page Mill, down the backside to Pescadero, up/down on Stage, up Tunitas Creek, down King’s Mountain, and a couple miles of relatively flat roads back home.  The route climbs from 0-2400ft at the beginning and 0-2200ft towards the end, with some shorter climbs in between.  It was great because it felt a lot easier than when I rode the same route back in April.  Back then it took 4:50 to complete the route, and this time it just took 4:23…27 minutes of extra free time in the day!

Unfortunately, I have a (hopefully) small injury on top of my left foot now.   I felt it half way through an hour run the day after the San Jose International race.  I thought it might go away and didn’t really feel it on Thursday during the bike/run workout.  After an easy run on Friday and the long climbing bike ride on Sunday, though, it was pretty obvious that it wasn’t just going to go away without rest.  Luckily, I had planned to take a few days easier this week anyway, so I haven’t lost that much run training yet.  I have a doctor’s appointment for next week in case it’s still bothering me, but hopefully the pain goes away, and I’m able to get running again soon, because I’ve really been feeling really great otherwise!
